Soils Laboratory Testing

In addition to consulting, SGS offers exploration services using AMS PowerProbes© along with soils laboratory testing. This combination allows SGS to provide both in-house and hands-on consulting for our clients from the project start to finish. We are proud in using this model. Our engineers not only perform the design work but physically sample and test the very soil and rock for which they are designing.

Geotechnical Consulting

Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical engineering is an important first step to any civil engineering project. We specialize in the behavior of earth materials and soil & foundation related engineering design.

Retaining Wall Design

Retaining walls are designed to retain soils and in some cases reinforce slopes. They provide additional options for site design where space is limited or where slope stabilization is required.

Sheeting, Shoring, and Excavation Stabalization Designs

Sheeting and shoring are used to retain soil for temporary and permanent excavations. We provide comprehensive earthwork recommendations to include engineered sheeting and shoring designs.

Foundation Designs

We provide geotechnical recommendations for both deep and shallow foundation designs, including allowable bearing capacity, anticipated settlement, and soil improvement techniques.

Slope Stability / Landslide Evaluations

Slope stability evaluations are conducted to evaluate performance of slopes for existing or design conditions. Landslide evaluations are performed to investigate slope movement.

Exploration Services

Conventional Test Borings

Conventional test borings offer visual inspection of the subgrade through sampling and provide standard penetration testing blow count values (SPT-N) which are used with generally accepted correlations to obtain subgrade parameters.
Picture

Test Pits

Test pits can be excavated up to depths of 12 feet below ground surface to explore subsurface conditions for geotechnical, environmental, and/or hydrogeologic explorations.

Cone Penetration Testing (CPT)

Cone penetration testing offers continuous data acquisition of a subsurface profile without sampling. Rods attached to cone sensors are pushed into the ground and send instantaneous data to a field computer reporting information of the subgrade.

Field Explorations

Other field explorations that we offer include hand borings with the option of dynamic cone penetration testing, Wenner soil resistivity testing, site reconnaissance, and test pit observations.

Laboratory Testing

A range of soil laboratory testing is performed in accordance with ASTM standards at our operations office in Rockland, Maine. Laboratory tests are useful to identify soil properties of obtained samples.
Picture

Forensic Investigations

We conduct forensic investigations for a variety of geotechnical problems, including settlement of existing foundations, displacement & piping of soil, groundwater seepage, and other foundation related issues.

Gravel Pit and Quarry Inventories

Aggregate and quarry explorations and assessments are often requested by contractors and developers to evaluate quantity and quality of materials.
