The Beginning. Summit Geoengineering Services (SGS) began in 1998 as a subsidiary of Summit Environmental Consultants (SEC) under the direction of Bill Peterlein. The purpose was to expand SEC’s capabilities by providing geotechnical consulting. In May 2010, Bill Peterlein and Craig Coolidge purchased SGS from SEC and began operating as an independent geotechnical consulting firm.
New Capabilities. In 2012, SGS expanded to include field exploration services with the addition of a drill rig (AMS rubber track direct push/auger) equipped with cone penetration testing (CPT) capabilities. SGS’s soils laboratory testing services followed soon after. SGS now has a fleet of drill rigs and a Kubota Excavator to provide a full range of drilling and test pit capabilities.
Today. Today SGS operates as a comprehensive geotechnical consulting firm that services northern New England clients from our headquarters’ office in Gardiner/Farmingdale, Maine and our drilling operations office in Washington, Maine. SGS continues to expand its exploration and consulting/design services with highly qualified professionals to best serve our clients.
The Future. In 2026, SGS added a 3rd principal partner, Lisa Turner, to help lead SGS into the future with additional sector support including permitting and landfill design and support.
