  • Project Summary:
    • Severe storms are inundating beach houses in Maine’s southern coastal areas and the houses need to be elevated onto piers
    • Recommendations are needed for pier foundations that are deep enough to avoid frost and wave scour
  • Project Challenges / Innovation:
    • Geotechnical considerations included marine deposits that vary between sand, clay, and organics, with variable depths to groundwater and bedrock. Some foundations may be below the water table in loose sands
    • Conducted geotechnical test borings
    • Prepared geotechnical design utilizing spread and column footings under a pier foundation system
    • Provided geotechnical consulting through design and construction to include subgrade inspection for variable soil conditions
