DAVIS STREAM CULVERT REPLACEMENT

  • Project Location: Washington, Maine
  • Services Provided:
    • Geotechnical explorations (test borings)
    • Laboratory testing
    • Geotechnical consulting
  • Project Summary:
    • Replacement of double barrel culvert at roadway crossing over Davis Stream.
    • Construction of new 40-foot clear span pre-engineered bridge to reduce stream disturbance and enhance crossing.
  • Project Challenges / Innovation:
    • Challenging drilling through roadway fill with cobbles/boulders in winter season.
    • Geotechnical considerations included fill with potential voids and localized wood debris, and potential for differential settlement due to sloping subgrade profile. Glacial till and bedrock were present under one abutment and soft clay on the other.
    • SGS successfully provided in-house geotechnical explorations, lab testing, and consulting on the project. Recommendations were provided for bridge foundations in accordance with AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications.
