OLD COUNTY ROAD RECONSTRUCTION
- Project Location: Rockland, Maine
- Services Provided:
- Geotechnical explorations including 25 test borings and 43 ledge probes
- Laboratory testing
- Geotechnical design
- Project Summary:
- Reconstruction of 1.4 miles of roadway with new aggregate and pavement section
- Addition of drainage system with new catch basins and drainage pipes
- Installation of 3,400 linear feet of new 8-inch sanitary sewer line
- Project Challenges / Innovation:
- Site work required extensive utility clearing and traffic control during the exploration
- Three exploration techniques were used throughout the project, including large diameter direct push sampling for obtaining quality samples of the roadway gravel section, and either direct push rod probe or solid stem auger drilling for ledge probes, based on location of probe and increased efficiency
- Geotechnical considerations included variation in existing roadway conditions for pavement thickness, gravel thickness and material type, variation in soil profile, groundwater, and undulating bedrock influencing construction of the drainage system and sanitary sewer line
- SGS prepared engineering reports in accordance with City of Rockland and Maine DOT guidelines for the project to include reconstruction of the roadway pavement section
